5 out of 5 stars BH & Gardens is great!   June 28, 2008

I bought this cookbook because I am tired of the new style of cookbooks. I don't find many appealing recipe books that go over back to basics. This book goes into detail of what a 1950's family's meal lifestyle was. Let's think about how important it is to can and freeze if you have not learned this from mom or grandma. With the way food prices are going up, it might be helpful to can and freeze veggies and fruits for the future. With the added chemicals and poisons in food, it might be better to make it homemade. This book will teach you all the necessary basics on cooking, entertaining, and all kitchen basics. I love the recipes in it. There is only on Spam recipe in it that I noticed. While I found the Busy Day Cake to be great as a strawberry short cake type of desert, instead of putting frosting on it, I put strawberries on it. I highly recommended book.

This is the best in my family's view, we are sending this one to our daughter in Australia, as a gift, she had one but it was mislaid or given to another family member when they moved. We know she will be delighted. cece

This is a reprint of a Classic 1953 Cookbook. I bought it for my Mother. She had this book when I was a baby. Many good recipes and memories. I highly recommend this cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Just like my mom's version   October 28, 2007

I grew up on scratch, home-made cooking and when I was recently looking for a cookbook with traditional American comfort food ideas this one stuck out. It calls for the use of butter and lard, it instruct you on how to make candy, bread, cookies and all of the goodies you hopefully had the opportunity to love while growing up.

This book is NOT a diet book; it would be best used for holidays, rainy weekends, when in need of comfort food or for good tasting ideas to tweak into the lower fat/carb/etc lifestyle. I'd trade home-made candy for the high fructose corn syrup sold in stores any day, hands down!

Sentimental reason: My mom had the real copy of this when I was growing up, which belonged to her grandmother. She bought me a modern version when I moved out on my own and I recently bought her this classic version for her birthday. This makes a wonderful gift for someone who loves to cook or eat REAL food.
