CookBook October 21, 2008 Stan C (Independenc, MO) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I did receive the item in an acceptable amount of time. I was concerned that I would receive it at all. I ordered three cookbooks from three separate sellers at the same time. This seller was the only one that did not keep me posted about receiving my order, processing the order, or the date it was shipped. When the book arrived there was damage to one of the rings holding the pages in. This damage was not listed, but the other defects were. I would not have purchased this item from this seller if I had been informed of the damage to the binder's rings. I will not purchase items from this seller in the future.
surprised October 12, 2008 Alice Handeguand I thought it was a joke and more recipes would be sent later, but none arrived. Not what I expected at all. I have always enjoyed Taste of Home magazine, but this "big" recipe book was lacking so much and I personally felt like it was a "rip".
Need a Basic Cookbook? Right Here! June 14, 2008 Future Southerner (Minneapolis, MN, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a very good general cooking cookbook. It is well organized with sections on the usual chicken, pork and beef, but includes tabs for grilling, pasta and sauce, quick breads and even lower calories. There is even an easy-to-reference listing of ingredient substitutions on the back inside cover as well as cooking times for various things in well-located places. Lots of updated recipes, plenty of currently popular ones such as chimichangas.
These are recipes from readers of Taste of Home magazine. They are tested and taste great. The focus is on what folks like to eat NOW verses 20 years ago. What you should know is that this book assumes that you have basic cooking knowledge although an interested beginner would have little problem cooking from it. There is a great glossary at the FRONT of the book--exactly where a beginning cook needs it! But it is primarily recipes. While there are a few offerings, if you are into gourmet food, this is not the book for you. If you want family friendly meals or meals that fit your budget, then this is certainly a good book for the shelf. I've tried 5 recipes so far and they were tasty.
My only caveat with this book is the 5 ring binder. As much as I like it, my first book arrived, factory wrapped, but with rings that wouldn't match. Turning the pages was impossible. Amazon replaced my book immediately, but 5 years from now, if I drop the book and bend the rings, I might be out of luck since the holes don't fit a standard 3 ring. My point is, if things tend to fall around your house (I have helpers), the format is not the best. Still worth it to me, however. I actually prefer this book to the Betty Crocker one, which was my old standby.
Note: this review was originally placed under the wrong cookbook title.
Good recipes, binding is terrible January 6, 2008 B. R. Eagen 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Worth the money, but don't expect much from the physical book itself. What a pain to deal with. Poor craftmanship for sure.
Good recipes, some are great.
Handy reference in kitchen.
I have many cookbooks, I regularly turn to this one for ideas and inspiration.
Thank you Taste of Home for a good recipe collection.
Shame on you Taste of Home for valuing your earnings over customer satisfaction.
I'd give it a five if the binding behaved itself January 2, 2008 Marianne O. Schmidt 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
These cookbooks are all comfortable and easy to have around. It's real people food for those times you could care less about carbs, calories, etc. The food has all been cook tested and family approved, and what's not to like? Other than the binding which is stiff and annoying this is an excellent book for beginners and experienced cooks. It's really nice to flip this open and find many recipes that you already know you will like. It's also a good reference book and a handy treatise on contemporary life and habits.
