Water and $ was great, but go with the chrome model GXFM04FBL May 28, 2008 Patricia Galvez (Linden, NJ) I loved this filter for a year but had the same problem as everyone else with the casing cracking and spraying water everywhere. I do like the price and the product to buy it again however. I also became interested in this product because it was the one of the highest rated at a low price on Consumer Reports as of 2007 (I don't know if that's changed, I just haven't renewed my subscription).
Now that I'm looking to buy it again I decided to look up the OTHER filter model that the cartridge is compatible with and am thrilled that it seems to be a chrome version of the same thing, so no more cracking. I haven't tried it yet, but I found it online for only $5 more including shipping and I would expect it to work just as well without the cracking problem. Chrome Model #GXFM04FBL
Filter top cracks after a few months February 25, 2008 Nash Jaffer (Las vegas, NV USA) I wish I had seen some of the other reviews, because I had the same experience as they did. The filter worked great for about 6 months. The filtered water tasted great. After 6 months, cracks developed in the filter top. I used epoxy glue and was able to use the filter for another 6 months, but then the filter cracked so badly that water shot out like a small fountain. After seeing that other people have had the same problem, this tells me that it is a manufacturing or design defect. It's too bad, because the filter did a great job of filtering while it worked.
Update 3/10/2008 After several emails to get the correct phone number to call, I was able to contact the customer service for the water filtering products at GE. After opening case #7993564, Jackie the customer representative said that she could not do anything about the defect (the filter housing developed cracks) since the product is no longer under warranty. I told her that I have seen several other people who have had the same issue according to the reviews on Amazon and that this looks like a design or manufacturing defect. She said she's not interested in that. If the product is not under warranty, she cannot do anything about it. This experience really helped me make a decision about buying any GE products in future.
Great filter. Mine broke after year and a half October 20, 2007 Ricky Levine (New York, NY USA) Amazing filter. You easily make up the cost that you would have spent on bottled water in a month or so. Not to mention helping the environment. Mine did get cracks in it after about a year and a half (as others have reported) though it still works, but not as well. The thing is so cheap though, and does such a great job that its well worth just buying a new one. Would be nice if it poured a little faster, but again, given the cheap price and the amount I am saving enironmentally and financially it is WELL worth it.
Doesn't last long August 15, 2007 Tony (Shickshinny, PA United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This water filter does a great job filtering the water until after a few months it gradually develops cracks in the top. The cracks eventually lead to the water shooting up and watering your ceiling. I tried contacting GE, Amazon, and the 3rd party retailer and none of these organizations would honor any type of warranty. Now I need to buy another one becuase I purchased extra replacement filters thinking that this product would last at least a few years.
Only lasts 10 months July 10, 2007 Opie (NJ) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Worked great for 10 months, until the top of it cracked and now I have water shooting all over the kitchen. Called GE and it's not covered under their warranty. Don't bother with this one.
