Completely Worthless January 2, 2009 D. J. Gullo (Wilmington, DE) As a previous reviewer pointed out, the grinder works fine; as long as the goal is to only grind the meat once. Trying to double-grind or use the sausage stuffer attachment is an exercise in futility.
First, the pusher diameter is much smaller than the aperture of the feed tube. Pushing down on the previously ground meat causes the meat to bypass the pusher, forcing it back up the feed tube. If the pusher were more closely match to the size of the feed tube, there would be less of a chance for the meat to escape.
Second, I believe the edges of the screw are not sharp enough to grab the meat and pull it along. Even when grinding the first time, considerable effort is required to send the meat through. This is with meat sliced into appropriate sized strips.
Finally, the tray and feed tube are too small. Grinding a pound of meat is not much of a problem. However, grinding 3-5 pounds or more can easily become an all day chore with this equipment.
The mixer is fantastic. Kitchenaid should stick to that area of expertise.
barely works - avoid this November 25, 2008 Casual Cook (New York) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I got the sausage stuffer attachments with the grinder kit. The grinder works OK but the sausage stuffer just plain doesn't work. the meat goes around the plunger and very little actually goes in the casing. It makes a huge mess and is very frustrating. I am looking for alternatives. As far as meat grinding, I've found my food processor does a good job so the grinder/stuffer attachment is a waste of money. It very surprising that Kitchenaide, who generally makes excellent products would sell a piece of junk like that. Avoid it.
