What a great oatmeal cooker! July 31, 2008 Mark S. Yuan (San Rafael, CA United States) I actually haven't used this as a rice cooker yet, but for rolled oats in the morning, it can't be beat. I love the small size, about the size of a toaster, very easy to clean, just the right size for up to 4 people with reasonable appetites. Nice details like a retractable cord and a clock that works even when unplugged (watch battery-powered).
Fabtastic Rice Cooker July 14, 2008 Frank R (Central, NJ) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'll keep this brief, since there are a number of other posted positive reviews.
I have owned various sized rice cookers and this one fits the bill for a small cooker that prepares enough rice for a couple or small family.
I have had this one for about a month and used it about ten times. Overall, medium and long grain white rices take about 40 minutes to cook, but come out perfect every time! I have also made "fried" rice in this cooker, combining prepared ingredients (sauteed veggies, meat, fried egg, soy sauce and seasoning) with the rice before cooking, and it too came out perfectly done. Have also used it to keep rice warm for up to 4 hours with no degradation in the taste or texture.
The design is slick, with a fingerprint-free metal finish, retractable cord and rice spoon holder (spoon included!). It even plays jaunty tunes when first engaged and when your rice is ready. The top-mounted display is easy to read and program, especially when compared to competitors' models with front mounted displays.
My complaints are few. First, although it is called a 3-cup cooker, it recommends cooking no more than two cups of white rice (pre-cooked) at a time. Also, the manual is translated from the original Japanese which makes it a little awkward to understand at times. Finally, although there are recipes included in the manual, they are few and suffer from poor translation. Otherwise, all is well with the Zojirushi NS-LAC05.
A wise buy despite its few shortcomings!
Great Product July 13, 2008 Gerald Berry (Salida, Co USA) This is a great product for a non-cook. I tried my hand at making brown rice with a pot and it came out pretty bad. But all you have to do with this product is follow the instructions and you have perfect brown rice.
Great! July 12, 2008 World Traveler (New York Metro Area, United States) Great, it lives up to all the excellent reviews. I had used a Zojirushi rice cooker in a rental condo in Hawaii. I was reluctant to buy one because it is expensive. My husband wanted it so I bought it for his birthday. It has been worth the investment. We have used it for rice, oatmeal (set it up to be ready in the morning when you wake-up), and wheat berries. You have to adjust the water for other applications but everything turns out delicious. Wheat berries and steel cut oatmeal turn out almost like tapioca with a moist berries that pops in your mouth when you bite them.
Great Appliance! July 11, 2008 vinb (chicago, IL) Having been raised on Japanese food my whole life I am a stickler when it comes to good quality white rice that is cooked to perfection. I can always tell the difference between good rice and cheap rice and whether or not its been cooked properly. Also since I've gotten older, I've grown to love brown rice. My old el-cheapo rice cooker would almost always under cook my white rice, and brown rice would make a huge mess all over the counter.
I have been lusting over one of these fuzzy logic cookers for a long time. I finally took the plunge and bought one last week. I love this little high-tech appliance!
A few tips to those who want to experience amazing Japanese style white rice: 1. Buy this or a similar "fuzzy logic" rice cooker. You can't go wrong with Zojirushi, they are a very reputable and well known brand in Japan. 2. When it comes to rice, buy the good stuff at your Asian market. You can tell by the price of a bag. The good stuff usually costs almost twice as much as the cheaper rice. Tamaki Gold ([...]) is a good one. 3. The quality of the water you cook the rice in is very important. I use tap water to rinse my rice, then cook it in filtered or bottled water, it makes a huge difference. 4. Follow the directions that come with your rice cooker. Be sure to measure the rice and water amounts correctly. Enjoy!
