5 out of 5 stars Great little rice cooker   December 24, 2008

I've been using this for a couple of months now to make brown and white rice and I've been very happy with it. It's a good size for 2-4 people. It makes perfect rice if you follow the guide in the booklet that comes with it. I thoroughly rinse the rice (more on that in the next paragraph), then soak it for 30mins before cooking, then when it's done cooking I let it stand for 15 minutes. Cooking usually takes 30 minutes to an hour depending on the type and amount of rice. The rice cooker switches to "warming" mode once it's finished cooking.

I would suggest you rinse your rice before cooking it, although there seems to be a debate over whether you should or not. Most rice sold in the USA is coated with extra vitamins by the producer. So, rinsing will remove the vitamins but will also remove a lot of the extra starch, making for a cleaner, lighter rice once cooked. To rinse, I put the rice in the pot, cover it with water, swirl the rice around throughly, then tilt the pot to drain the water. Repeat several times until the water stops getting cloudy as you swirl. With brown rice especially the water gets extremely cloudy. Others will tell you not to rinse rice before cooking to preserve the nutrition, so it's something you have to decide for yourself.

Back to the review... I wanted a rice cooker without a non-stick coating because I'm paranoid and would rather not risk the health effects of Teflon. It takes a little extra work to clean this pot but as long as you soak it then it's not a big deal.

This cooker is definitely worth the money - it's simple, works well and doesn't cost a lot. You also get the ability to steam food with it. The only bad thing about it is once it enters the warming cycle, the only way to turn it off is to unplug it. But that's really a non-issue for me and if you can live with that then you'll have a good little rice cooker.

Rest assured that the low price of this rice cooker does not mean that you'll get low quality rice. Just the opposite actually. My first rice cooker was a fancy (expensive) fuzzy logic version, and I returned it because it made awful rice. This rice cooker makes perfect rice of every variety. With brown and whole grain (or any rice that requires cooking longer than 20 minutes per bag instructions), you need to add a bit more water - approx. 1/8-1/4 cup depending on type of rice.

1 out of 5 stars Poor excuse for a rice cooker   September 30, 2008

Panasonic SR-G10G 5.5 Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer. This product only has one chamber, unlike the Rice Cookers sold in Japan. As a consequence, even following the directions given in the accompanyimg brochure, the rice comes out undercooked, and it also sticks to the bottom of the pan.

5 out of 5 stars This is the rice cooker/steamer to purchase.   September 9, 2008

This is the second one that I purchased. I bought one for myself a while back. I use it almost everey day and love it. This latest purchase was for a gift for my daughter, and she also loves it.

I highly recommend this unit for anyone in the market for a rice cooker. It's great for a family of four.

It cooks the rice perfectly, every time! You can't beat it for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Great cooker for those who want to eat rice without Teflon bits !!!!   August 13, 2008

Several reviewers have commented saying they don't like it because it does not have non stick surface but has only aluminum pot. This cooker is for those who want to eat rice without TEFLON bits peeled off and mixed with rice. Those Teflon bits are toxins and can hurt one's body in the long run. Yes, it is harder to clean than non-stick surface but healthier.
