Disappointing January 9, 2009 Jeffrey B. Henriques (Madison, WI USA) Like one of the other reviews here, we get a slimy brown puddle all over the counter whenever we cook brown rice in our cooker. While cooking it bubbles up and out of the vent hole and all around the top of the lid. It's a complete mess and very disappointing. I've never had this problem before with a rice cooker, but I'm getting rid of this cooker.

We've used our Breville Rice Cooker at least 400 times - it's still going strong. Sure, the bucket has a few dents from being dropped by now, but the way it's built it's not a problem. :-) We use it at least every other day to cook rice for our dog and once or twice a week to cook rice for ourselves.
I don't understand the reviewers who complain about the rice coming out "crispy". Huh? We've used all sorts of rice and it always comes out great as long as we mix the right amount of water for the type of rice - pretty easy.
We've gone through a couple rice cookers before this one. Both fancier with displays and all and smaller, but much more work to clean and much slower at cooking rice. This one is just insanely amazingly fast - and it's easy to clean. And as I said, the rice comes out great. Just as with any other cooking method, you have to add the appropriate amount of water. My rule of thumb is to add rice and then add water standing twice as high as the rice. If you want to measure more accurately, then take 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of water for each cup of rice. More for brown rice.
With a bit of practice you'll just be tossing in some rice and some water and you'll get the measurements close enough to get good rice. It's easier than cooking an egg.
If the rice is old then let it sit and soak in water for a little while before cooking (be careful to drain it properly after).
The reviewer who had trouble with the rice making a nice is right that with some rice it will boil over and make a mess *if you don't rinse the rice first!*. Some cheaper rice is notoriously bad at this. Even with better rice it is best if you rinse it a couple times before cooking.
We had another rice cooker that broke after it boiled over because the liquids would leak inside it and harmed the electronics or some such. I don't think that could happen with this one. We did cook 40lb of some cheap red rice that made a gigantic mess if we didn't rinse it properly (and a pretty decent mess even if we did). Can't blame that on the cooker though! It is super easy to clean; no mess inside. Just clean off the pot and put the glass lid in the dishwasher. Or if you clean it right away the lid pretty much just needs a rinse.
Lots of problems with this little machine March 13, 2008 J. Kingsland (Lake Mary, FL United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have several other Breville appliances, so was looking forward to receiving this one. But I've had many problems with it - no matter how much I rinse the rice, it bubbles up and out of the little hole in the lid and makes a huge mess all over the counter. I have to place a towel over the whole thing to catch all the spray that comes out of the hole. Maybe the thing is getting too hot? It also leaves a layer of overcooked rice on the bottom, every time that I use it. You also have to be very careful if you have to move the thing while cooking, the little cook/keep warm button will flip out of the cook mode far too easily. I've also had it flip off in the middle of a cycle (just one time). I would never buy this again, and would never recommend it to anyone either.
Expected more from this product February 11, 2008 D. H. (Los Angeles, CA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My new husband put this rice cooker on our registry. I was apprehensive because who needs a rice cooker that makes enough rice to feed a small army? It takes up way too much storage space in our little apartment, but worse is the quality of rice. Every time we've used the cooker, it leaves a layer of crispy rice at the bottom that I have to throw away. Also, the instructions indicate that it should be one cup of rice to one of water, but when I tried those proportions, the rice was too dry and I had to throw that batch out. I upped the water to 1 rice: 1 1/2 water. That's helped a little. I wouldn't buy this cooker again. I'm tempted to make our rice the stove-top way.
This Rice Cooker is Awesome! December 21, 2007 Ricki D. Smith (Kansas City, MO) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I purchased this rice cooker after multiple attempts to learn to cook rice on the stovetop, :( I did alot of research before buying it, to the point I drove my girlfriend nuts). I don't think you can find another company out there who gets 5 star reviews an everything they make for your kitchen. Very high end appliances at affordable prices, check them out yourself. This cooker will cook 27 cups (thier cup which is about 3/4 cup USA measurements) even though the box says 10 cups (that is uncooked rice). It works flawlessly, is high quality, and has 2 stackable stainless steel (not plastic) steamer trays. This was a big deciding feature for me! You will not be disappointed in this purchase. I bought it at Bed Bath & Beyond because I always get those 20% off coupons on the mail, $51.70 final price. I WILL be buying Breville products in the future like thier WOK and indoor grill, also 5 star rated and now I know why! If you've been on the fence with buying a rice cooker don't wait another minute buy this one today!
